I recently had a fuckboi on my friends list that made a status bashing excessive makeup use, then proceeded to mansplain to everyone in the comments that tried to explain the real reasons behind wearing makeup. While excessive makeup can be a controversial topic, I thought this would be a perfect time to post this guest blog on why makeup can actually be a good thing!
Whether you do your makeup on the natural side, or perform daily transformations with dramatic makeup, I hope you take something good away from this!
Celebs and starlets who wear a full face of makeup at all times are often bashed by society. It makes me wonder if people actually understand concepts like ‘freedom of speech’ and ‘body positivity’. Lots of people enjoy adorning their face with cosmetics, irrespective of age, ethnicity, profession, and gender; yet the most frequent concern is: why do people wear makeup?
Honestly, there is no one simple answer to that. Every person is unique and thereby has their own reason. If doing makeup makes you happy, that is enough to justify it as a good thing!
Nonetheless, the following incentives might change the way you think:
A Tool for Self-expression
Given the endless variety of colors and textures, makeup is an art in itself. It can be used to communicate different moods or generate a certain vibe. For instance, you can embody the darkness within yourself with a lot of black pigmentation. Creative or artsy people like to experiment with a combination of multiple colors and textures. Bold and powerful people, such as criminal defense lawyer and senators are likely to go for deep lipstick shades, emphasized eyebrows, volumizing mascara, and neutral eye shadow.
The Confidence Boost
None of us are born perfect and we hope to make the best of what we inherited. The common misconception is that people wear makeup to alter their appearance, whereas what it really does is enhance our natural features. People who wear makeup tend to be confident and daring!
Makeup can enable a person to look brighter, younger, and draw attention to our facial features! Looking good translates to feeling good! People who wear makeup are perceived as well groomed and full of zest, which gives them an edge in professional and personal situations when they need it.
Skin Protection
Many modern makeup manufacturers incorporate healthy and green ingredients in their products. These cosmetics not only make your skin look flawless on the outside, but also protect and nourish it in different ways.
For example, moisturizing properties keep your skin hydrated, antioxidants eliminate or delay signs of aging, and SPF shields you from harmful UV rays. It acts as a barrier against several external factors including dust, heat, and smog.
Amazing Photos
A hint of blush can accentuate your cheekbones, a dash of eyeliner can make your eyes pop, a dab of foundation/concealer can make your skin look flawless, and a bit of lip-gloss can truly highlight your smile. Makeup allows you to get that picture-perfect look that turns heads and drops jaws. Whether you dream to be the life of the party or an Instagram queen, amazing photos can help you get there!
Social Magnet
I have personally witnessed so many friendships that developed over makeup products. People who are fond of the same cosmetic brands, lip colors, or merely an eye pencil are destined to become besties for life. So many conversations among strangers start with a makeup reference and end with outing plans for the weekend. If you are good at your own doing makeup, expect to be approached by the coolest individuals in the crowd and prepare for the adventures of a socialite.
While I don’t wear makeup often, when I do, I’m almost always told by someone while out and about that they like my makeup. Not only does it give them a conversation starter, but it truly makes my day receiving a compliment! I always make it a point to let people know when I like their makeup because I know how good it can feel!
If you’re still reading this, let me know in the comments what you thought! I don’t often wear makeup, and can honestly say that I love how I look without makeup just as much as how I look with makeup. If you don’t wear makeup, all the power to you! No one NEEDS makeup, but it can be the icing on an already awesome cake on the days you need it.
